Hello.
Okay, I’ve never run a blog before. I guess most people haven’t.
At the beginning of 2023, I set myself a goal of watching 100 movies over the course of the year. Two a week, I thought, was manageable, and, as it turns out, it was. One week in December, I’m currently just over 120 watches in. I’m not saying I’m the ultimate film buff–the numbers posted by presumably unemployed members of a Facebook group I’m in can top 500 and 600 films watched at the end of the year.
Sometimes, I’m overwhelmed. The sheer amount of movies in existence–the medium stretching across the last 130-odd years, is too much for any person to watch. Besides that, they keep making more! Every single week, your local chain cineplex premieres a handful of new releases, nothing compared to what gets slopped onto streaming services or screens briefly at small, independent theaters or internationally.
In November, I was really struck by a fervor. I watched 19 movies. Again, that’s not really anything crazy for some people, but it’s probably my peak during my periods of full occupation. Reflecting back, however, on my month and my year, it’s clear to me that I’ve barely made a dent.
Why start a blog, then? It’s only going to take up more of my time. Excellent point. I try to dedicate most of my free time to creative writing, which does have its lulls. Usually I fill those by flitting between different projects instead of waiting for inspiration to strike. Recently, however, I’ve decided to stick to only two projects, resulting in some writing gaps. I’ve always been interested in writing about movies, and I kinda miss writing essays (English major .moment). Figuring something out and articulating it just feels really good. So, that’s why.
There really aren’t enough hours in the day to accomplish everything, whether it’s watching a million movies, finishing my screenplay, planning another, or keeping this blog. Nevermind all the other stuff you need to do to live and be a member of society. I hope I can develop some consistency and quality with this exercise. I appreciate any and all of YOUR time on your end.
Thanks for reading,
Emily
